There was a time in my life when I was actually really good at maths, I was even head of Maths at the primary school I taught at back in the 90’s. My Maths and English teaching days are a lifetime ago, these days the numbers are all about the cost of materials, advertising, marketing and accounting. The first three I can manage myself, but the accounting side of things is a skill I have absolutely no interest in learning. There are people who do that for a living and I’m more than happy to employ them to do that job for me.
I spent the first few years of my freelancing life as a designer doing my own tax self assessment and to be honest it was a case of fill out the form, cross my fingers and hit send. The dread of what happened next was a constant. To cut a long story short, after several attempts to get information out of HMRC and being reduced to tears on more than one occasion I decided to get the professionals in. It was the best decision I ever made.
These days it’s even easier with online banking capable of linking with accounting apps. If there’s one tip I’d offer for any new business, get an accountant! And breathe…
