Like every piece of crochet, knitting or macrame that I create, every human being is different. How can we ever really say that something is 'normal'. What you consider normal, might be totally weird to me and vice versa. There really is no such thing as normal.
I’m a privileged individual - I’m a white female, I had a good education and I’m heterosexual - I neatly fit into the ethnicity/sexuality questionnaires. By default, the odds are stacked in my favour, my destiny is more to do with how I manage myself, rather than how society perceives me.
June is Pride Month - a time to celebrate individuality. Being proud of one’s gender and sexuality shouldn’t even be an issue, we shouldn’t feel the need to celebrate this for only one month of the year. If people accepted that we all have a right to be the person we were born as or who we want to be as our life progresses, we wouldn’t need to highlight the issues that mean Pride Month is necessary.
Pride is a joyous celebration but let’s keep it in perspective. The reason we have to celebrate it is because there is so much inequality in this damn world of ours. By all means get out there and party, but remember why the party is happening and be part of the change to make ‘normal’ a rude word.
